The central backup and archive service is available for all LSB staff members. Thereby all data from notebooks, local PCs or servers is automatically saved or archived via the network. Therefore we use the backup software Symantec Backup Exec, which collects the data and saves them fully automatic on a security tape, using a security robot.

The backup server features the server operation system Windows Server 2003 Storage. Furthermore the computer includes a partition with Backup-To-Disk savings of all relevant servers. To ensure an appropriate data security and redundancy the data is then saved on tape. To ensure appropriate security and redundancy of the data, the data security takes place via the generations’ principle (father-son-method). As hardware a tape library from Fujitsu Siemens – model Fibrecat TX24 – with one drive and 24 tape cartridges was implemented. The connection of the tape library with the backup server takes place via a SCSI-interface. Therefore the backup server is extended by an appropriate SCSI card.

Because the changing of the tape takes place automatically, the daily manual change is omitted. Because of capacity and fast tape backup the LTO-3 technologies are used. The data transfer rate amounts to 58MB/s and so the backup rate amounts to 209GB/h.
